After Flair and his brother Ric was set out in a cardboard box at a local rescue in early 2020. Ric was a slightly wobbly and was soon adopted and went to his forever home, Flair became a nanny kitten for Sarge's animal rescue over 2 years and helping with over 100 kittens. What is a kitten nanny and what does it mean? Flair lived in a community kitten room at the rescue and when kittens came in, Flair would groom them, play with them, and cuddle with them. Flair provided much needed socialization for older kittens and warmth and comfort for the youngest kittens. After 2 years of being a nanny cat Flair's veterinarian recommended that he be adopted out for his own health as he couldn't control himself round unlimited kitten food.
I have a condotion called cerebellar hypoplasia, sometimes called wobbly cat syndrome, is a congenital condition in cats that is neither contagious nor progressive.
It occurs most commonly when a pregnant cat becomes infected with feline panleukopenia, virus and it passes to her unborn kittens. It can also be caused by trauma to the unborn kittens, malnutrition during pregnancy, or other inflammatory conditions contracted by the mother.
CH affects the cerebellum of the kittens, which is the area of the brain that controls fine motor movement, balance and coordination. The affected cats often have noticeable symptoms from birth, which range from mild signs of head bobbing and high stepping to more severe signs like tremors and the inability to walk. The condition may not affect all kittens within the same litter. Of those kittens that are affected, their symptoms may vary greatly between littermates.
Now that i have retired from being a kitten nanny, My mom & Dad along with myself have a special spot for special needs cats whether it be medically or behaviorally. while it is easy to find home for the cute and fuzzy kittens to find a home, Cats with special needs tend to wait longer for their forever homes. If you have ever met an adoptable cat that look or acts a little different, don't be afraid to ask the rescue staff about these cats, you would be amazed at how adaptable these cats are and how much they can accomplish. I mean look at all the cool things i have done, I got to compete in a cat show and still come in the top 5, Even hissed at a few of them.
